The hard disc drive (HDD) in these DVD recorders are just like the hard drive in a computer and so in just the same way as you can store files in your computer you can also store files (television programmes) in your DVD recorder with a hard drive.
The hard drives also have much more recording space on them than a DVD and so while a DVD can fill up quickly the space on a hard drive will last for a very long time. This is a good job because you cannot change the hard drive as it is a part of the DVD recorder, you can buy DVD recorders with hard drives of different sizes though and so it is always wise to buy a DVD recorder with the largest hard drive that you can afford. The sizes include 80GB, 160GB and 250GB with the 80GB DVD recorders being the cheap options and the larger capacities costing more.
One problem is that when a recording is made on the hard drive you cannot watch it on another television without either connecting the DVD recorder to the other television or transferring the recording onto a blank DVD. This is not such a problem as transferring onto a blank DVD is easy although if you like to watch allot of recordings on other televisions then sticking to blank DVD's may be better.
So buying a DVD recorder with a hard drive can make your recording so much easier but they do cost more than the standard DVD recorders. The 80GB DVD recorders are often quite cheap but that is not a huge amount of space and will fill up quite quickly, the larger models do cost more but are well worth it in our opinion as you will be very grateful of that extra space once you have made allot of recordings. In order to help you find the cheap deals we have listed all of the hard drive DVD recorders that we could find on the right and shown them with the cheapest first so that the cheap deals are at the top of the page which will mostly be the 80GB models and the larger capacities are further down the page.
